I am a life-long native of the Chicago area.  I earned my B.S. from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a major in psychology.  I went on to pursue my Masters and Doctoral degrees at Argosy University/Illinois School of Professional Psychology.  I've worked in the behavioral health field in a variety of capacities since 1993, obtaining my doctoral degree in 2003.   From multipally-diagnosed, residentially-placed adolescents to domestic violence offenders to private practice settings, the range of my experience is broad, varied, and comprehensive.   In addition to my clinical work, I serve as an adjunct professor, teaching Masters and Doctoral students at Roosevelt University as well as undergraduates at the College of Lake County.  Whenever possible, I  continue to design and present training, workshops, and seminars for educators and fellow behavioral health professionals.

My approach to therapy is holistic and non-pathologizing.  Rather than focusing on a client’s diagnosis and symptom presentation, I focus on and learn from the client’s story. I and my client examine the meaning that has been made from and the lessons that have been learned from the client’s experience. Problematic and disempowering stories can then be “co-edited” so that the plot becomes more solution oriented and empowering. I take a collaborative approach to my clients, focusing on the quality of the client – therapist relationship, and making a priority of acknowledging and honoring the client’s perspective.  I  stress the connection of Mind – Body – Spirit in my work.  I am a staunch advocate / ally of the LGBTQ community.  The thread of Social Justice weaves its way through my clinical and academic work.

A Wellness Venture

I'm excited to announce a collaboration between my practice and Point Being Wellness. Point Being Wellness is a holistic massage & healing venture recently launched by Sherry Hoffman RN, LMT, CCST. Besides serving as a cross referral source and professional colleague, she also happens to be my wife. Sherry is a Registered Nurse (RN) by trade. She has worked across settings; hospital med/surge units, inpatient addiction treatment and critical home health care. She is a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), well versed in several modalities, including Manual Lymphatic Drainage. She is also a Level 3 Reiki practitioner and a Certified Cosmetic Surgery Therapist (CCST). Sherry is a natural healer who takes a personal, comprehensive holistic approach to healing the body, mind and spirit. She and I will be referring clients to one another as we develop a healing alliance across our respective practices. I encourage you to check her out at her website, Pointbeingwellness.com. Email her for information at Pointbeingwellness@gmail.com, or call her directly at 847.596.1461. Of course, I'll do my best to answer any questions you may have as well. Thank you all.
